Diabetes & Insurance

by Christopher Paul Jr.

Diabetes is what's often called a "self managed" disease. In other words, it requires you to manage many of the elements of your lifestyle in order to keep the disease from getting worse. Things like diet, exercise and monitoring are all required to keep your diabetes "in check".
In addition to those things, there are frequent medical treatments and procedures required. That can really get expensive. Even with health insurance (depending on your deductible and plan) you can spend a lot of money to stay healthy.
There is help out there. There are some companies that will help you manage your diabetes and qualify for free meters, free diabetes supplies and even some free medical help. How much of this you will qualify for often depends on your health insurance. Most people with Medicare and private insurance will quality for at least some of that help. Many will qualify for all of it. These companies basically help you determine the most you can qualify for that is covered. They win by providing you with the supplies (reimbursed by your insurance) and you win by getting the supplies, meters and advice at little or no change.
If you don't have insurance - or your insurance is very limited - there are still promotional offers that can save you a lot of money. Many diabetes meter makers, for example, will give you a free meter if you buy three months worth of test strips with it. Since you have to buy the strips anyway (and if you do a little shopping to make sure the price is good) - you come out ahead.
Here is a checklist of things that may be covered. You should ask your insurance company - or work with a reputable diabetes supply company that can help you make sure you are qualifying for the most you can get:
Diabetes Meter. Most policies will allow you a free diabetes meter.
Diabetes Supplies. Many will cover your routine supplies (test strips, insulin, diabetic pills, etc.).
Surgeries and Advanced procedures. That varies policy by policy. The best advice here is to go over your policy carefully. Enlist your doctor's help if necessary. Make sure you understand what you'll have to pay for BEFORE any procedure.
There are a websites that can help you find the right companies to work with. Make sure you select ones that take good care of your privacy and personal information.
